ALEX BANAYAN will be the keynote speaker at the upcoming conference in New Orleans, October 2-4, 2019.

“When you change what people believe is possible, you change what becomes possible.” That’s the lesson Alex Banayan learned as he interviewed the world's most successful people over the course of seven years for his bestselling book, The Third Door. He found that all of these leaders, from Bill Gates to Maya Angelou to Warren Buffett to Lady Gaga, found a Third Door to get in to the arena where they eventually excelled. It was almost always an entry they created themselves, that didn’t exist for anyone else. At the conference, Alex will share fascinating Third Door tales. But it’s his own creativity, his focus on origin stories and his insight into the self-made mindset that offer real inspiration for gift planners, who help successful people believe that they can change the world.

The day before his freshman year final exams, ALEX BANAYAN hacked The Price Is Right, won a sailboat, sold it, and used the prize money to fund his quest to learn from the world’s most successful people. Since then, Banayan has been named to Forbes’ “30 Under 30” list and Business Insider’s “Most Powerful People Under 30.” He has contributed to Fast Company, the Washington PostEntrepreneur, and TechCrunch, and has been featured in major media, including FortuneForbesBusinessweekBillboard, Bloomberg TV, CNBC, Fox News, MSNBC, and CBS News. Banayan has presented the Third Door framework to business conferences and corporate leadership teams around the world, including Apple, Google, Nike, IBM, Salesforce, Disney, Harvard, and countless others.

Best Practice Update: Collecting IRA Beneficiary Distributions

CGP’s recent member survey showed that among organizations that received any kind of retirement plan gifts in 2018, 42% had some degree of trouble collecting death proceeds from IRA administrators. In the same survey, advisors reported that retirement plan gifts are already one of the most common things they discuss with clients, and they expect them to become even more popular in the coming years. It’s time to break down the obstacles that prevent these gifts from reaching charitable organizations, as donors intended. In this plenary, you’ll learn from three experts who are working to smooth the path for IRA beneficiary gifts to charity--Jon Tidd through the IRS, Johni Hays through Congress and Jeff Comfort through communication channels that help everyone take advantage of current and evolving best practices.

Friday, October 4, 12:30 – 2:00 pm - Closing Luncheon

Exclusive Research Preview: Key Findings from a New Survey of Planned Gift Donors

The closing luncheon will feature Dr. Elizabeth Dale presenting important findings from the Giving Institute’s new survey of planned gift donors at the closing luncheon of the CGP Conference in New Orleans, October 2-4, 2019.

CGP attendees will get an early look at important new research in New Orleans. Although each annual edition of Giving USA: The Annual Report on Philanthropy brings the most comprehensive national data about all types of charitable giving, we always wish there were more information about planned giving. This year there will be. With support from CGP and other sponsors, Giving USA Foundation is conducting a study of planned gift donors that includes both survey responses and in-depth interviews. Data and conversations will help us to understand donors’ motivations for making planned gifts, how and when they made their gift decisions and how their legacy plans may change over time. During the closing plenary, survey director Elizabeth Dale will preview key findings from the study, which will be published in November.

Elizabeth J. Dale is an assistant professor in the Master of Nonprofit Leadership Program at Seattle University. Her research focuses on the philanthropic practices of LGBT individuals and couples, women’s giving and funding for women’s and girls’ causes, and the intersection of gender and philanthropy. Elizabeth received her Ph.D. in Philanthropic Studies in 2016 from the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy.

This conference teaches me how to talk to my donors and gives me the technical behind the scenes skills that give me the confidence in front of smart people who have smart goals for their philanthropy.
